Co-Ed Proposal - 15th November 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing today with some news regarding the future of St. Columba’s National School.  It has been decided by the Board of Management to commence proceedings to change the status of our school to that of a co-educational school i.e. one taking girls and boys.

I am sure this will be very well received, as over the years we have been repeatedly asked by parents why St. Columba’s School is not co-educational.  The school becoming co-educational would be a huge advantage to parents in many respects.  On a practical level, parents would only have one school drop off and collection and all the holidays would be the same.  Equally, the educational and social development of our existing pupils would be enriched.

At the moment this idea is at consultation level.  We have approval from our patron and the decision will now move on to the Department of Education.  When the Department of Education make their decision we will be in a position to say if and when this transition will occur.  In the meantime we will keep you up to date with progress.

All of us on the staff of St. Columba’s are very enthusiastic about this development and we hope that you as parents will share our enthusiasm.  You are more than welcome to submit your opinion on this plan, in writing, to the school office if you wish.

Yours sincerely,

Eileen Whelan
