Fifth Class - Ms. Barrett

1/22

Work to be Completed During the School Closure May 25th - 29th.

Hi everyone!

I hope you all have had a good week.

I really enjoyed reading your projects on Google Classroom. Thank you for sharing them. Don’t worry if you have not finished your project you can send it to me when you are finished.

For the girls who have finished the last project, I thought it would be a nice idea to start another project this week. The theme will be ‘Changing the Way We Live’. I will list some suggestions below as to what you can include. You can complete the project in any format you wish: in a scrapbook, by typing in a Google Doc, on Slides or Powerpoint, by drawing or writing and uploading pictures. Be creative! Use what you have at home.

It was lovely to catch up with some of you on our web chat last Friday. We will have another web chat this Friday at 10 am.

Feel free to send me photographs of your art work or cakes that you have baked so I can share them with the class on our web chat this Friday. I am looking forward to seeing more of you online this week.

I will continue to set exercises on Readworks.org and Mangahigh. Here are the sign up links for both again, in case you are having difficulty logging in:

Readworks: www.readworks.org/student. Class code CL42DQ

Mangahigh: https://app.mangahigh.com/register-student/13452/777659?p=541401

We will continue to use Léigh sa Bhaile and Busy At Maths. If you need to access either book online, you can do so here: www.cjfallon.ie

As always, these are only suggestions and you should only complete as much as you are able for.

Have a good week and stay safe,

Ms. Barrett

Science project: Changing the Way We Live

I would like you to do a project on ‘Changing The Way We Live’. Please focus on the reasons why people need to change the way they live in order to help the world and its climate.

You could include some of the following headings (these are just a guide and if you’d like to change them, feel free!)

  • Introduction

  • Name 5 problems that humans have caused in the environment because of the way we live. What effect are we having over animal and plant life? Can you describe these problems?

  • Think about the following topics: food, housing, transport, clothes, animals, city living. Choose any 3 of these areas and discuss the changes within these areas that you could make as an individual, that our school could make and that your community could make. What effect would these changes have on the environment?

  • Conclusion - summarise your most important points.

You will have 3 weeks to complete it. This week we will focus on research and next week you can write and put together the project. You can upload section by section or you can upload the completed project at the end - I don’t mind!

For today, start researching the problems that you will talk about. Make some notes for yourself.

Tuesday

Léigh sa Bhaile: Re -read p.98 and try to memorise the phrases. Can you make up your own sentences using the new phrases?

English:

  • Spellbound: week 32 ex 3

  • SNIPS: Look up the following words in your dictionary and put them into sentences: hygiene, hardware and humid.  *This is only for children who do not do Spellbound.

  • Readworks.org: Log in and complete the assignment for today. Continue with the set of articles from yesterday and read another 2-3. Add another few sentences to your Book of Knowledge.

Maths:

  • Mangahigh: Complete the set assignment

  • Mental Maths: Do week 33 Tuesday

Science project: Changing the Way We Live

  • Choose which of the topics  (food, housing, transport, clothes, animals, city living) you are going to discuss and start researching possible solutions in these areas.

Wednesday

Check out the Wellness Wednesdays page for ideas on what to do.

Thursday

Léigh sa Bhaile: Read p.98. Look up any words you’re not sure about. Use the box at the end of the page to help you. Write out the answers to the questions.

English:

  • Spellbound: week 32 ex 4

  • SNIPS: Look up the following words in your dictionary and put them into sentences: hundred, healthy and insect.  *This is only for children who do not do Spellbound.

  • Readworks.org: Log in and complete the assignment for today.

Maths:

  • Mangahigh: Complete the set assignment

  • Busy At Maths: p. 91 ex 1. This exercise uses place value. Ask yourself ‘What is the value of the underlined number?’ If you have the number 274 and you need to make the 7 a zero, think to yourself, the value of 7 in this number is 70. If I want a zero in place of the 7, I must subtract 70. So I put 274-70= 204 as my answer. You can use a calculator for these. (I will upload a little video on Google Classroom with an example)

Science project: Changing the Way We Live

Here is a recipe you might like to try on Wellness Wednesday.

Recipe: Chocolate Chip Cookies

https://www.biggerbolderbaking.com/best-ever-chocolate-chip-cookies/

This week, I wanted to share this chocolate chip cookie recipe. If you follow the instructions carefully, you will get a cookie similar to the ones from Marks and Spencer! I’m posting the link as there are lots of useful tips and the YouTube video is also very helpful. This time, I divided the mixture in two and added M&Ms to one half and chocolate chips to the other. Hopefully it works!

Calling all Dav Pilkey fans!

I know quite a few of you are fans of Captain Underpants and Dog Man. You may be interested to know that Dav Pilkey will release new videos on Fridays with drawing demonstrations, readings and other fun activities. Some material will be released on The Library of Congress website starting from today.

Check out the news article here.

Also check out Dav Pilkey's own website for more drawing tutorials.

Enjoy!
